Dezeen: California Carriage Housed turned into Plywood-lined Sewing Studio

The scope included both the design and building work for the Seamstress Studio Remodel project in Pacific Grove, a coastal town in Northern California. The former carriage house was built in the 1900s, and was found decaying and infested with spiders.

On an "incredibly limited budget", the studio rebuilt the structure from the inside-out. A corner wall dividing the space in two was taken out, and the south facade swapped for glazing. Pacific Grove is notorious for its abundance of fog, so the south wall was removed and replaced with glass to allow the maximum amount of natural light. A gravel-filled trough just inside the glass creates a space for potted plants, and allows for a seamless connection to the surrounding garden. The remainder of the walls and ceiling are covered in sheets of birch plywood to create continuity between the surfaces.

Location: San Francisco, California Size: 1100 SF

Year: 2016

The goal of this project was to transform a cramped, dimly lit, 1970's era, one-bedroom apartment located in the Castro into a bright, contemporary bachelor pad. Oblique City removed the walls hemming in the tiny kitchen and replaced them with a steel beam and steel columns. The cabinets are custom fabricated from white laminate and stainless steel, with a custom stainless steel counter with integral sink. The sink side cabinets are suspended from the new steel columns and left floating 12" above the floor. A slab of reclaimed lacy oak cantilevers from the end of the floating cabinet and makes up the bar counter. The floor is whitewashed French oak.

Designboom: Panoramic Roof Deck for San Francisco Home

Divisare: Berkeley Roof Deck

The program for this small roof deck project in the Berkeley Hills, was to give the client, a local travel writer, an indoor/outdoor work space that was connected tot he surrounding nature. For the new space, we took advantage of an existing, under-utilized roof area above a breezway that connects the main house to the garage and guest house. This allowed the project to take advantage of the panoramic views of the San Francisco Bay, Golden Gate Bridge, and surrounding oak studded hills, that otherwise went unnoticed. The project consists of a large canopy, below which resides a nestled corner seating area. Stairs rise one story further to a small viewing/meditatin platform, with even more expansive views. A large void in the canopy frames the sky and clouds from the main deck area. The entire structure was clad in marine grade plywood and whitewashed with a non-toxic exterior grade milk paint.
